According to the Phoenix Police Department (PPD), 25-year-old Abel Kai Gabla is charged with sexual assault and kidnapping after he entered the school campus, posing as a doctor, lured a student into a classroom, and assaulted her at Orangewood Elementary School on November 19.
PPD officials said in a statement to Fox News Digital that officers were called to the school after administrators reported an incident on campus.
Police said, "When officers arrived, they learned that an unauthorized man had entered the school campus and lured a grade-school girl into a classroom, where he sexually assaulted her." "At some point, the student managed to push the man away. He then fled the scene before officers arrived."
FOX 10 Phoenix reported that court documents indicate that Gabla allegedly caught a student's attention when he pretended to be a doctor and said he needed to examine her.
After fleeing the school, police found Gabla, who was jailed on multiple charges.
According to the outlet, Gabla had been released from jail two weeks earlier on similar charges and was also accused of involvement in human smuggling across the U.S. border.
According to FOX 10, during Gabla's court appearance, a prosecutor said he had been convicted twice in 2021 for sexual conduct with a minor and is a registered sex offender.
The news station reported that the Washington Elementary School District said in a statement that school administration immediately called 911 and put the school on lockdown for more than an hour.
The district wrote, "He was on campus for approximately 10 minutes and during that time, he made inappropriate contact with a student." The district shared a separate statement with Fox News Digital, which it released to parents on Friday. It outlined the results of its internal investigation, which also revealed that Gabla was a former student at the school, attending from 2012 to 2015.
Although initial reports indicated that Gabla entered campus following a student who had sneaked inside, further investigation revealed that he entered through an open lobby door and left with a late student, the district said.
The district further stated that following the investigation, a staff member has been placed on administrative leave.
Orangewood Elementary Principal Emily Patterson wrote, "We understand how dangerous this situation has been and we want you to know that we are reviewing every aspect of our safety procedures and communication to ensure that an incident like this does not happen again."
According to FOX 10, Gabla is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 1.
