Patrick Mahomes on Chiefs' loss to Jaguars: 'We've already lost a lot of games'

The Kansas City Chiefs lost 31-28 in Jacksonville on Monday night, squandering a 14-0 lead thanks to a dire mix of mistakes, penalties, and missed opportunities.

"Obviously, it's very bad. You let a game slip away. ... Any time you get a lead like that and you can't hold it the rest of the game, it feels even worse," Patrick Mahomes said.

K.C. took a 14-0 lead by forcing Trevor Lawrence to fumble at the goal line and then taking it 97 yards for a touchdown. Then, things went south.

Penalties piled up, the defense couldn't contain Lawrence, and Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd's 99-yard interception return touchdown turned the tables.

The Chiefs suffered their first loss after blowing a lead of 14 or more points since Week 17 of 2021 at Cincinnati. They had won 22 consecutive games with a lead of more than 14 points (the second-longest active winning streak in the NFL after Detroit – 26).

K.C. had a string of close wins last year. They won 11 single-digit games in 2024, the most in league history. In 2025, the average comeback has been much higher. All three of the Chiefs' losses have been by single-digit scores.

"We have the players, and we've played well and really well at times in games, but then we get crushed by penalties, mistakes, interceptions, fumbles, or whatever," Mahomes said. "We've done that to ourselves all season. Player after player has been going back and forth. In this league, the competition is so close that these [moments] change the game.

"We have to get better. We've already lost a lot of games."

Mahomes led a great touchdown drive, gaining tight possession for 6:23 minutes and eventually taking the lead. It looked like many of the Chiefs' victories last year. This time, the defense couldn't make the final stop, ending with a bizarre fumble by Lawrence.

"That's what hurts," linebacker Leo Chenal said of the defense's failings, via ESPN. "We've built that trust where the offense can rely on us in the final moments. It's really sad that we couldn't do our part." Every single person feels it."

From the missed interception to Mahomes' pick-six, to the 13 penalties for 109 yards, to the Jags' failure to run a single play on their final drive, it was a completely forgettable night.

The flags were particularly problematic. These 13 penalties equaled the most in any game in the Mahomes era (a shootout with the Los Angeles Rams in Week 11, 2018). The end of the game was affected by penalties. Harrison Butker kicked the ball out of bounds, giving the Jags excellent field position for their final drive. Then, cornerback Chamari Conner was flagged for pass interference in the end zone, leading to the game-winning field goal for Jacksonville.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of the penalties, "It doesn't matter if I agree with them or not. They called them. And so you have so many penalties, you give up field position. You can totally outplay them, but it doesn't matter. The score is all that matters, and that's where we have to take care of ourselves."

After falling to 2-3, the Chiefs have a losing record in five games, only the second time in the Mahomes era. In 2021, they also started 2-3 but rebounded to a 12-5 record, losing to Cincinnati in the AFC Championship Game.
