Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton, known for her captivating presence both on and off screen, has died of pneumonia, her family has said.
A family statement released to People magazine on Wednesday said: "The Keaton family is deeply grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received over the past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11."
The statement continued: "She loved her animals very much and was steadfast in her support of the homeless community, so any donation made in her memory to a local food bank or animal shelter would be a wonderful and appreciated tribute."
Keaton's family confirmed her death to NBC News last week, but did not provide additional details at the time, requesting privacy.
Keaton, who passed away at the age of 79, was born in Los Angeles. She dropped out of drama school in California and moved to New York to pursue her acting career, landing her first breakthrough role on Broadway in Woody Allen's "Play It Again, Sam."
She translated her role in this 1968 play to the big screen a few years later. Keaton starred opposite Al Pacino in the 1972 hit film "The Godfather" and quickly established herself as a rising Hollywood star.
Keaton won her only Academy Award in 1977 when she played Allen's love interest in "Annie Hall." She later received nominations for other works, including "Marvin's Room," which co-starred Meryl Streep and a young Leonardo DiCaprio.
Although Keaton had a prolific career as both an actor and director, his uniqueness and humble personality are what his loved ones remember him for even after his death.
Jane Fonda, who starred alongside Keaton in the 2018 film "Book Club," wrote that it was hard to believe her friend had passed away.
In an Instagram post, Fonda wrote, "She was always a spark of life and light, constantly laughing at her own foibles, endlessly creative... in her acting, in her wardrobe, in her books, in her friends, in her homes, in her library, in her worldview."
At an event over the weekend, Reese Witherspoon recalled her first meeting with Keaton at age 15, early in her career. Witherspoon auditioned for a role in the film "Wildflower," directed by Keaton, and called Keaton one of her first mentors.
Witherspoon said, "She's incredible, indelible, and a truly original human being."
Keaton is survived by her daughter, Dexter, and son, Duke, whom she adopted at age 50.
